Mar 25, 2009 · I know this won't help you here, but I was having a similar problem with a mopar 318 engine that I replaced the dist with an electronic model in. Turns out, they have an adjustable vacuum advance mechanism built right into the dizzy (stick a 3/32 allen key into the vacuum port and turn in or out) and it was way off!
The mechanical advance is then tuned using a Sun distributor machine to ensure a precise timing curve that will provide maximum power throughout the RPM range while eliminating engine damaging detonation. An adjustment free vacuum advance canister is selected to work with the centrifugal advance for better drivability and increased fuel mileage.
Use terms like "ignition timing", "vacuum advance port", "vacuum port" or "carburetor vacuum". You got both sides of the issue, anyway. FYI: I still use timed vacuum on my MSD ignition and it seems to run best for my ZZ4 application. I don't know what the "whistling" sound when the motor is warmed up would be, but I'd bet a vacuum leak.
