Put car in drive, press brake until brake hold light comes on. Now turn wheel back and forth and you will hear a creaking noise. It is not suspension but are the brakes making that noise.
Noticed this same noise when turning out of my driveway and accelerating. Thought it was a strange noise, so googled it and found this forum and thread. From the other responses ,seems like maybe all the Atlas’ might make this noise, but I hope VW comes with a fix because this is not something that should be a normal noise for a car.
When I turn the steering wheel at slow speeds, a creaking noise comes from the car whether its when I turn right or left. It doesn't sound like the creaking noise is coming from the balljoints but instead somewhere near the steering coupler. The car drives amazing and doesn't make any clunking noises or anything over bumps.
Jul 22, 2020 · If your steering wheel is making a loud rubbing noise when turning, the culprit could be the upper bearing on the steering column itself. This can cause the the plastic on the back of some steering wheels to rub against the cowling on the steering column. This is most noticeable in hot weather which causes some parts to expand.
You may get lucky and need only a new o-ring or a new hose clamp on the inlet hose at the pump. Add a change-out of the fluid reservoir and fresh fluid. All easily and inexpensively done as a DIY project. Edit: the grinding noise when turning may indicate the rear diff needs to be serviced.
The upper strut bushing/bearings make more noise than usual when they wear out. Cold weather will make all the bushings talk, but while turning the strut/spring moves and that bearing could be noisy. Find a way to duplicate it at the dealer and show the tech.
When driving, sometimes there's a noise (like an oscillation); most often when/after I turn right. It increases in frequency with the car velocity. The noise occurs sometimes when driving straight or turning left. The noise didn't occur in the rain. Overnight, the probability of the noise occurring dropped. The noise doesn't occur when I brake.

I suppose you could put the car on jacks and have a buddy turn the wheels back and forth while you pinpoint the noise. Please PLEASE make sure you chock the rear wheels and put on the e-brake first. If you decide you need to replace the tie rod end, be prepared to drive the car straight to a shop that will align it for you.

This is much more noticable and it is a 'creaking' noise when I pull the steering wheel to the left. I don't think this ever happens when pulling the wheel to the right, but its 100% happening whenever I pull to the left at low speed (around, 1-10mph i'd say).
Jun 15, 2020 · My car makes a deep groaning/creaking noise as I come to a complete stop and only then. It occurs for a fraction of a second when stopping normally at the exact moment I reach a complete stop. If I brake harder, it'll be louder and start slightly before the complete stop is reached.

There are many potential reasons for the car to be creaking when turning. The problem could be the ball joint, tie rod end, strut mount, or CV axle. Those are ball joints and make thunking sounds when they go bad. Most likely it's the coil spring isolator, but it could be the strut bearing. If the car is close to 10 years old, and you need struts anyway, consider purchasing loaded struts. That will give you new isolators, and springs.

Tears, or cracks in the CV joint boot. Grease splattered along the inside of your wheel rim. Shuddering during acceleration. Let them drive it a bit and then slow down, press the brake then turn left or right a bit... they will get the noise.
